The National Cancer Institute is engaged in efforts to harness the power of nanotechnology to radically change the way we diagnose and treat cancer. Novel and multi-functional nanodevices will be capable of detecting cancer at its earliest stages, pinpointing its location within the body, delivering anticancer drugs specifically to malignant cells, and determining if these drugs are effective. Functionalized nanoparticles would deliver multiple therapeutic agents to tumor sites in order to simultaneously attack multiple points in the pathways involved in cancer. Such nano-therapeutics are expected to increase the efficacy of drugs while dramatically reducing potential side effects. In vivo biosensors would have the capability of detecting tumors and metastatic lesions that are far smaller than those detectable using current, conventional technologies. The NCI formed the Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer to pursue applied nanotechnologies for cancer detection, therapy, and prevention with an aim to achieve clinical translational stage of these technologies towards culmination of the program.  This presentation will describe the details behind the organization and science and technology of the Alliance.

Dr. Piotr Grodzinski is a Director of NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He coordinates program and research activities of the Alliance which dedicates around $150M over funding period of 5 years to form interdisciplinary centers as well as fund individual research and training programs targeting nanotechnology solutions for improved prevention, detection, and therapy of cancer.  Dr. Grodzinski received Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Southern California. He is an inventor on 15 patents and published 47 peer-reviewed papers, 7 book chapters, and delivered over 100 invited conference presentations.

The conference will explore the current state of healthcare in the United States with an emphasis on California. We will address the need for additional healthcare reform in the wake of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, and learn what is currently in the works to provide universal coverage to all Californians. Experts in the field will provide training on legislative advocacy and how to effect change in California. There are also many leadership opportunities available -- this is a chance to make history!

 

The conference will take place at the CSULB Beach Theatre in the University Student Union from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 15. Registration will be open from 9:00 - 9:45 am. Sessions will begin promptly at 10:00 am, please allow enough time for travel and registration. After the conference we will head to the Beach Club for a No-host Mixer and After-Party. United Against Infectious Diseases (UAID) is an international volunteer organization that promotes research, advocacy, and awareness in infectious diseases via testing, counseling, new technologies, and education campaigns.

This January 13th-15th, UAID will be hosting its annual Infectious Disease Symposium at Yale University. Themed "Infectious Disease Interventions: What’s YOUR Role?” it will bring together global health experts and students, feature unique workshops, and give you an opportunity to meet people who are as passionate about making a difference as you are! In addition, UAID will be taking students from across America to Panama, Sierra Leone, and South Africa this summer to conduct HIV testing/counseling, train community health workers in smartphone software to triage patients/manage medical data, and lead awareness campaigns.

What do Unite For Sight volunteers do?  Our Global Impact Corps volunteers come from very diverse backgrounds, including those interested in public health, medicine, international development, social entrepreneurship, and the social sciences.  They work with local doctors to eliminate patient barriers to care for patients living in extreme poverty.  They assist with patient education, visual acuity screening, patient intake, distributing the glasses and medication prescribed by the local eye doctors, and other important support tasks.  They also have the opportunity to observe the surgeries provided by the local doctors. Additionally, volunteers may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for those interested in pursuing global health research. For example, we currently have volunteers pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.
